a sneek peek from "Hawaii High" by PPG

By Professor Potgrower
HAWAII HIGH touch up smallfile.jpgThe Professor has decided to let TWR members in on a little project he's been working on. The following is an excerpt from the story "Hawaii High" the life and times of a pakalolo grower.
I just wanted to let out a piece of it for your reading pleasure... I hope. Please feel free to comment and critisize the work,

Axel loves weed. He has for a long, long time. He had his first close encounter of the third kind when he was merely 7 years old. It wasn't that pleasant of an experience per say. Axel doesn't really remember the getting high part much. It was more the 7-up he remembers most clearly. It was the relief of the cold refreshing 7-up on his young tender throat that was really roughed up by that first bong hit. His Mom's best friend Carol was babysitting him that afternoon. Axel had a lot of babysitters over the years. As usual Carol was doing bong hits. Axel knew what bong hits were. Axel had been educated by his Mom that Marijuana was kinda like alcohol where as people used it to feel good. It was also made clear that it was illegal and Axel was not to mention anything about it because it was possible that his Mom could go to jail for having grass as she put it. That is what his Mom called it, grass. His Mom felt that one should only follow laws that are just. She used a similar quote by Martin Luther King jr. to support this opinion. She was definitely old schoolboy today’s standards but new school at the time. Axel never remembered a time when his Mom didn't smoke herb. Axels’ Mom always reacted well with smoking as far as Axel was concerned. Weed was associated with laughing, eating and deep intellectual conversation unlike the booze that he associated with yelling, arguing, and violence. He had seen all of this first hand. Herb was good, at least it smelled good to Axel especially compared to the second hand tobacco he endured throughout his entire childhood. When Carol offered Axel the bong hit it probably was more like a joke and Carol probably didn't actually think Axel, a 7 year old would go for it. But he did. The predominant memory was of how harsh it was on his young little throat. He immediately went for the ice cold 7-up at his side to sooth his injured throat. Of course there was the accompanying violent coughing and drooling followed with many laughs at how funny Axel looked in this coughing fit. He didn't remember actually getting high either, go figure. Ha ha, that was it. Carol never told his Mom and that was his last experience with herb Axel had for years to come. But, 'till this day when the conversation turns to "I first got high when...” Axel can always bust out " I was doin' bong hits when I was 7!". That usually caps off that conversation. And Axel usually likes to have the last word. And this story usually wins any pissing contest about when I first smoked weed.

“When ever you think you want to smoke grass, you just tell me Axel” said Kathleen, Axels’ mom. She was an attractive woman.  Even more so as Axel got older and realized how his mother’s good looks helped get them through hard times. Kathleen stood at a respectable 5’7” with a slender frame. Being one of three siblings she was another red head in the family tree along with her older brother scooter. Her bright blue eyes were keen like a bird of prey yet alluring with the mystery that accompanied her sharp gaze. Kathleen was a struggling single mother of two and Axel was “the man of the house” and he knew it. He had heard that saying more than once. Whatever his mom said had to be good as gold. She was his link to the world. Everything he was to learn would come from this woman and he was like a sponge. Kathleen was aware of Axels’ mental prowess and she counted on it as a way to give him any advantages she could pass along. Kathleen knew she was Axels’ biggest influence and she was of the mind that she would prefer to expose Axel to the edgier things in life rather than having him learn from “the street” as it were.

“If you decide you want to try grass, you just let me know” said Axels’ mom. He was kinda surprised and in his mind he also thought “I already tried grass! Ha ha!”

Axel acted surprised but in fact was not. “Really?” “I’d rather you smoke it here with me than somewhere on the street with God knows who”. Replied Kathleen. Axel didn’t know what to say besides “okay mom, I’ll let you know”.

It wouldn’t be long before Axel would take his mom up on her offer. He felt like it was a right of passage at the age of 10. He was watching his mom smoking a pipe load of some recently deseeded ganja from a lid of some Columbian commercial. His mom always did this ‘hemp ritual’ like everybody else did in those days. She had a deep cigar box that she had found shopping at Gemco. It had the word “nothing” printed all over it in many fonts and sizes in all direction covering the box. It was simply referred to as the nothing box. If anyone asked “what is in the box?" the reply would simply be “nothing!”. A family joke in Axels’ household.

With the large bright yellow box glaring “nothing” in Axel vision his mom saw him staring vacantly at the box as she toked away. “Did you want to try some?” asked his mom. The answer was yes but Axel wasn’t staring at his mom smoking her pipe. His attention was just drawn by that bright yellow box that had something in it. He replied “yeah, I guess so”. His mom made sure he was making this choice of his own free will and said “Are you sure? You just looked like you wanted to try”. Well he did but she was slightly mistaken by his look. Axel decided that this would be a good time to try smoking weed…again” He replied “sure” as he held out his hand for the pipe.

The “first” time went by quickly and Axel fully complied with the mandatory coughing fit and eventually waving off the pipe when his mom returned it to him for the fourth time. He got high but not really stoned.  His mom must have known this, being an old ‘head’. Once again the smoke was not too friendly to Axels’ young lungs. This was basically dirt weed, the grass was full of emptied seed husks and whatever other woody stuff that Kathleen would screen/grind through her metal screen colander she cleaned her weed with. This was weak, harsh marijuana to be frank. It was like 3% THC weed. It would be 3 more years before Axel would actually get stoned.

Axel smoked less than a handful of times after that afternoon session with his mom. Not letting him puff more than two hits each session his mom regulated his intake carefully those few times although he didn’t realize it. In her own way she was looking out for the boy.

. Axel wasn’t lured by Mary Jane at that time. He just felt like he was growing up and smoking grass was something adults did and along with alcohol and kids, on occasion, might have a half a glass of wine or, in Axels’ case, a couple of puffs off of the peace pipe.

Speaking of the peace pipe Axel was made aware of marijuana’s place in the Native American culture at a young age also. He was educated about his Indian heritage and was told of the ways of these people his people. Along with how the white man had decimated these great people Axel was told of how Indians, as he learned Native Americans to be referred to as, that the peace pipe was used as a sacred tool for insight and peaceful dialog between disputing parties. He was told how the herb would help create a state of mind that was extra conducive to peaceful thoughts and open mindedness. He saw this effect nearly every time his mom and he friends would smoke. Often conversations would go off into deep intellectual theories about the nature of the universe, thee nature of human psychology and other types of discourse that always accompanied the smoking of the herb. The peace pipe meant something to Axel way before he realized years later that the Indians were smart engineers when it came to smoking weed Him learned later that an extra long pipe cools the smoke and therefore makes it much smoother and easier to smoke…an enjoyable experience. This just cemented in his high regard for the wisdoms of his ancestor’s culture.

Axels’ relationship with the Native American bloodline he came from became an integral part of his being as he grew up. In his mind being a scant 16th to 32nd American Indian was something to be very proud of. “My people” has been the rally cry for so many peoples that have suffered terrible atrocities. From the Jews to the Blacks, the Indians were as much as a victim as any other people. Axle identified with the role of the victim. This would be a reoccurring theme throughout Axels’ life. There was a certain amount of riotousness or justification for indignation that came from being of a victimized people. This indignation was a large part of Axels’ mom’s persona. She had to be sharp, quick on her feet, and strong for her and her children. If she felt she was being taken advantage of or her rights were being infringed upon she would not let it stand. It was always “get up, stand up!” with Kathleen and Axel soon learned of it’s advantages as well as how it brought confrontation and drama but confrontation was a necessary part of fighting for what was right. That is what Axel learned. To fight for what was right. The Indians fought to the bloody end and never gave up even though it became clear that defeat was inevitable. The spirit of the warrior. That is what His mom exuded. That was his role model. It may not have been his mother’s intentional lesson of life but along with survival of the fittest, to the victors come the spoils. Axel learned early on how history is written by the victors and that the Indians didn’t get a fair shake in this regard either.

The theme of fighting for freedom was imprinted upon Axel even more by his mom with her support of the civil rights movement and the teachings of Dr King.

I hope you all enjoy this story... Axel's adventures turn out to be unbelievable, funny and just out right inspirational. His adventures take him to places and people rarely seen by anyone. And there is weed...lots and lots of weed! and then there's more weed. Let me know what you think. PPG

The Good News, The Bad News and The Regular news.

By Dave Warden
Hey Pot People,
The good news is that The WEED Report is still %100 independently owned and operated by yours truly.

The bad news is the merger ended up being a really crappy deal so I had to kill it. I'm sure I'll talk more about the situation once I get a few minutes. I have once again wasted months trying to  get ahead instead of just trying to get by. Lost alot of time that could have been used for editing or blogging, etc. Oh well, someday I'll give up trying to hit homeruns and just be happy getting on base.

The regular news is that a group of WEED Reporters is coming to L.A. for THC Expo. We are going to hit the convention and smoke as much as possible.  I'm trying to get some time off work so I can really hang with the posse.  Prof Potgrower, Bubba TX, Sees In The Dark and several other V.I.P. 's will be in attendance. Whomever can come down should. The EXpo was a great time last year.

Gotta go get back to smoking oil & editing episode 24.

Stay Medicated!
You know I will!
